Future Of The Somerville Home Decided

A merger will keep the building open, but it will no longer serve as a rest home.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A nonprofit specializing in behavioral healthcare and human service programs announced Tuesday that it has finalized a merger with The Somerville Home. Riverside Community Care will renovate the facility and incorporate it into its operation.

The rest home, founded in 1898, previously announced it would close by the end of the year due to financial reasons. Its residents have since been moved to other locations.

"We are pleased that the final chapter for The Somerville Home has culminated in a collaborative partnership with a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to serving the community," Jack Connolly, a member of The Somerville Home’s board of directors, said in a statement. "Riverside is of this community and already provides needed services to Somerville residents; now they will have a well-located, soon-to-be-updated facility in which to continue that work."

Riverside will use the property to provide non-residential programs for children, adults and families. The renovated building may eventually have two apartments for people served by the organization.

Riverside's services on South Street will relocate to The Somerville Home building due to redevelopment in the South Street area.
