How Somerville Voted In The 2020 Democratic Primary

Joe Biden may have pulled off an unexpected victory in Massachusetts, but he was not the favorite among Democratic voters in Somerville.

SOMERVILLE, MA — Unlike across the rest of the state, Joe Biden was not the favorite among Democratic voters in Somerville on Super Tuesday. In fact, he placed third among Democratic candidates, behind Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

Warren was the favorite, garnering 11,080 votes, or 40.6 percent, according to unofficial election results from the city. Sanders received 9,861 votes, or 36.2 percent, with Biden lagging behind with 4,327 votes, or 15.9 percent.

In the Republican primary, President Donald Trump received 730 votes, followed by Bill Weld with 118 votes.

Voter turnout on Super Tuesday was much higher than Somerville's own election in November. More than 28,000 ballots were cast during the primary, while just 13,790 voters showed up for the municipal election.
