NEWS FROM NEXT DOOR AND AROUND THE WORLD
Somerville residents who follow the news have a rich array of choices. Learn more about the diversity of news outlets in this SNN segment.

Somerville residents who follow the news have a rich array of choices. The three weeklies, the Somerville Journal, Somerville Times and Somerville Newsweekly, all have avid readerships, as well as websites with photos and some video. Many of these are also present on Facebook and Twitter, and increasingly, social media is where readers interact with these “papers.”
The other major paper is the student-run Tufts Daily, which focuses largely on Tufts University, but which also often has news, analysis and event coverage of interest of a broader community.
There are also numerous other places people in Somerville get their news. Online sites that are mostly or even totally volunteer-powered, like Somerville Voices and Somerville Beat, have political, cultural and other kinds of news, features and annoucements. On SCATV, programs like Greater Somerville, Fouye Zo nan Kalalou (in Haitian Creole) and Somerville Pundits provide news and views, and of course Somerville Neighborhood News has news in video and text form every two weeks, on Channel 3 and also online.

The U.S. Census reports that about one-third of the city’s households speak a language other than English at home. These communities are also seeking news, about local events and issues, and about the countries from which they hail. From the Greater Boston Nepali Community website and Sajha.com for those interested in and/or from Nepal, to El Planeta newspaper and the associated television station, to the Brazilian Times, the Haitian Reporter and radio programs on numerous AM and FM frequencies, Somerville’s communities are covered, with local and global news. Here are a few more of the news sources mentioned to our reporters: Nossa Radio USA, Radio Energy Boston, Tele Kreyol 86 of Boston, Cuenca Vision-WCEA, Radio Tele Boston, and the program Tele Galaxie.
