Obituary: Francis 'Slim' Rego, 93, Somerville WWII Vet

Rego was one of the last remaining Timberwolves, a storied infantry division that fought in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Mr. Francis "Frank" "Slim" Rego, a lifelong Somerville resident, passed away in Melrose on August 1, 2017, he was 93. Born and raised in Somerville he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Riddle) Rego. Frank was a member of the Greatest Generation and served his county honorably during World War II. One of the few surviving Timberwolves to have fought in Cologne, he saw combat in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. A decorated veteran, he was a Bronze Star recipient.

Frank, also known as "Slim", was a talented musician, and at one time was the headlining act; along with his beloved wife Joy, at the Indian Ranch. He was a member of the Country and Western Hall of Fame, New England Chapter and VFW Post 6800 in Somerville. Dearly beloved by all who knew him, he will be deeply missed.

Frank was the beloved husband of the late Joy (Wile) Rego. Devoted father of the late Ronald Rego and his surviving wife Carol of Somerville. Cherished “Papa” of Kimberly Rego and her husband Frank Kelly and Shelly Rego. Great-grandpapa of Declan and Olivia Kelly. Dear brother of Mary LePage of Weston and the late Walter and Joseph Rego.
