• Somerville Secures State Grant to Grow a Greener, Cooler City (thesomervilletimes.com) — Somerville just landed a $187,200 state grant to redesign its tight sidewalks so they can host more shade trees while staying accessible and protecting underground utilities. Over the next year, the city and partners like Groundwork Somerville will design about 100 new planting sites, gather resident input in virtual meetings, and prepare construction-ready plans to cool overheated neighborhoods.
   

• Mass. reports 8th human West Nile virus case as risk remains high across Boston area (masslive.com) — Somerville is currently classified as a high-risk community for West Nile virus, with most human cases statewide linked to Middlesex and Suffolk counties. State health officials urge residents to use insect repellent, cover up at dusk and dawn, and remove standing water as mosquito activity and arbovirus monitoring continue into the fall.
   

• Tenant right to purchase bill closer than ever on Beacon Hill (commonwealthbeacon.org) — A statewide tenant right-to-purchase proposal backed by Somerville Senator Pat Jehlen is closer than ever on Beacon Hill, with House and Senate versions now in conference committee. The bill would let renters or partner nonprofits match offers when large multifamily buildings go up for sale, aiming to preserve naturally affordable housing. Supporters and landlord groups are sharply divided over how it would affect the housing market.
