Man Arrested After Steel Broom Assault In Somerville (patch.com) — Somerville residents may be alarmed to learn that a man was arrested after allegedly striking another person in the head with a steel broom during a dispute in Davis Square's Statue Park. Police say the victim, over 60 or disabled, suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Cambridge City Hospital, while the suspect reportedly admitted using the broom after a verbal argument escalated.
   

2. 3 Firefighters Injured Battling Somerville House Fire (patch.com) — Somerville neighbors woke up to a three-alarm blaze tearing through a long-vacant Park Street home, forcing firefighters to retreat as the roof collapsed. Three Somerville firefighters were injured while battling the intense flames, which drew mutual aid from several nearby cities as crews worked for hours to bring the fire under control.
   

3. Somerville PorchFest Feedback Sought via Community Survey (thesomervillenewsweekly.blog) — Somerville is asking residents for feedback on this year's PorchFest to help shape how the beloved music event is managed in 2027 and beyond. You can share your experiences as a host, performer, neighbor, or attendee by completing the city's online survey, which is open through October 25.

Newton, Somerville, Cambridge Top List of Six Safest, Wealthiest Mid-Size Cities (wror.com) — Somerville ranks third on a new list of the safest, wealthiest mid-size cities on the East Coast, with a median household income above $130,000 and home values near $940,000. The analysis compares Somerville's crime rates, housing costs, and livability to nearby Newton and Cambridge, underscoring how attractive and expensive the area has become.
   

5. There are 25 free vaccine clinics in Cambridge and Somerville, and places to get free masks and tests - Cambridge (csindie.com) — Somerville residents can access 20 free Covid and flu vaccine clinics starting Oct. 15, including an all-ages clinic at the Office of Immigrant Affairs on Cross Street. Additional Somerville and Cambridge locations are also handing out free high-quality masks and rapid tests, helping neighbors stay protected through fall and winter regardless of insurance status.
