Somerville Hiker Rescued From New Hampshire Mountain (patch.com) — Somerville readers may be relieved to learn that resident Sara Grube, 28, was safely rescued after injuring her leg while hiking Mount Monadnock's White Dot Trail in New Hampshire. Multiple rescue teams carried her nearly a mile over extremely difficult terrain before she was transported to a Keene hospital, with costs covered by the state's Hike Safe Card and Search and Rescue Fund.
   

2. Large State Grant Plants The Seeds For Somerville Tree Effort (patch.com) — Somerville has secured a $187,200 state grant to redesign sidewalks and plant more street trees, aiming to cool urban heat and improve accessibility across the city. Planners will test new tree-planting methods on narrow streets, identify about 100 planting sites, and invite residents to weigh in through virtual meetings as designs are finalized by mid-2027.
   

3. Yafa Bakery & Café looks to convert empty space in Davis Square into its second location - Cambridge (csindie.com) — Somerville residents can look forward to Yafa Bakery & Café opening a second location in the long-vacant former Posto space at 187 Elm Street in Davis Square, while keeping its original Somerville Avenue shop open. Neighbors and the Davis Square Neighborhood Council welcome the move as a way to fill a prominent empty storefront and bring more Mediterranean pastries to the square.

Events and media coverage for Sarah Miller's new book (bu.edu) — Somerville readers can catch Professor Sarah Miller at Upstairs at Bow Market on Tuesday, October 6, for a talk exploring why social media may not be the real problem in bullying. The free event, tied to her new book on youth and online life, will offer practical ideas for adults trying to better support kids in the digital age.
   

5. New MCAS Results Show Gains in Math, Declines in English and Science (ground.news) — Somerville Public Schools are highlighting encouraging MCAS gains, especially in math for Grades 3–8, even as statewide English and science scores slipped and many districts still trail pre-pandemic levels.
