Plan for New Somerville Fire Station Stalls at Public Hearing
Aldermen held off on approving the mayor's controversial, project until they had more information.

The prospects of a new fire station were stalled earlier this week when Somerville aldermen backed off approving $5.4 million plan until they had more information, according to a Wicked Local report.
The project, proposed by Mayor Joe Curtatone, faced opposition with almost 100 residents attending a July 6 public hearing to speak out against it, the report stated.

The new station would be constructed at 515 Somerville Ave., and serve Spring Hill, Union Square and Porter Square, the report stated. The city would need to acquire the land through eminent domain, which is where the $5.4 million price tag comes from, the report added. The actual cost of building the station is not know, according to the report.
Aldermen had questions about how the city would pay for the new station, which would replace the current Union Station firehouse, the report stated.
