Plastic Straws, Stirrers Next On The Chopping Block In Somerville
An ordinance proposed at last week's Board of Aldermen meeting would prohibit additional plastic items in the city.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Plastic straws and stirrers could soon be outlawed in Somerville. An ordinance introduced at last week's Board of Aldermen meeting would ban city buildings and restaurants from having the items, though medical facilities would be exempt, according to the Somerville Journal.
Alternatives to plastic, such as metal, glass, bamboo and biodegradable materials, would be allowed. The proposal is still under review and has not yet moved from the Open Space, Environment and Energy Committee to the general Board, the Journal reported.
Two years ago, Somerville banned plastic bags in an effort to preserve its wildlife and environment.
