A DPW worker found the bag in a trash can at a soccer field.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A Somerville Department of Public Works employee found a backpack in a trash can near a local school that contained, among other items, a soft pellet AK-47 rifle, officials said. The backpack was found on the soccer field next to the Capuano Early Childhood Center. In addition to the rifle, which was broken, there was a soft pellet pistol, soft pellet magazines and a ski mask in the bag, according to police.
Police said there is no imminent threat, but they are working with other law enforcement agencies to investigate. The Somerville Police Department has increased patrols at all public schools and notified parents.
Wednesday night, a 17-year-old called police to identify himself as the owner. He told officers he was given the equipment by a friend who was moving overseas and intended to use it for Airsoft sports when he turned 18, police said. The teen's aunt and uncle demanded the weapon be broken and thrown out when they found it in the house, according to police.
