Boston Cop Suspended, Accused Of Playing Slots With Robbery Money

Joseph Nee is charged with stealing money from the BPD evidence room and attempting to launder it at Plainridge Park Casino.

BOSTON, MA – A Boston police officer has been suspended amid allegations of stealing money from the department's evidence room and using it to play the slots at Plainridge Park Casino. Joseph Nee, 44, was indicted this week on charges of larceny over $250 and money laundering, according to the state attorney general's office. Following Nee's indictment, he was suspended from the department without pay, Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said.

"The behavior alleged in today’s indictment is inexcusable," Evans said. "I hold my officers to the highest standards and expect them to obey the law that they have taken an oath to uphold. Allegations like this can damage the trust my officers have worked so hard to build with the community. The Anti-Corruption Unit will continue to investigate all allegations of wrongdoing by my officers."

Nee, a 19-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, was assigned to the Evidence Management Unit in Hyde Park. He is accused of stealing approximately $2,000 from the file of a closed bank robbery case and using it at the casino, the AG's office said.

Nee allegedly fed some of the stolen cash, which was identified by traces of red dye from an anti-theft dye pack that exploded during the robbery, into the slot machines at the casino, according to investigators. He then allegedly redeemed the money at a casino kiosk for cash that was not tainted with red dye.

Nee will be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on Oct. 30.
