Schools Roll Out New Website (Leia em Português)

In September, the Somerville Public Schools' website received more than 25,000 hits. That wasn't even a record. Some months, the number of hits climbs as high as 40,000. But not every user has been happy with the website itself. That's why the schools completely overhauled it.

"We're really trying to get word out to the community about the site's new features," said Gretchen Kinder, Somerville Public Schools research and development coordinator. "We're still finishing up the changes. But by the end of October, we'll have the site where we want it to be."

Among changes: A better calendar, easier navigation and video tours 

Among other things, improvements include a revamped calendar, better presentation of teacher information and easier access to afterschool program details. Video tours of the schools were also added.

"This all started because we got lots and lots of complaints about how crappy the site was," said Kinder. "So we launched a process to gather community feedback via surveys, focus groups and statistics on usage, and then started rebuilding the site from the ground up."

One change they were surprised to find they needed was left-hand navigation bars that link to more content.

"Those links have always been available at the bottom of each school's homepage. But I'm told that there are people who are scrollers and people who are clickers, and the problem is that only the scrollers scroll down the page and find the links. The clickers just stay at the top of the page and assume the links are not there," said Kinder. "So we're making it easier for everyone by having links to click higher up on the page."

Due to budget, the overhaul took two years

The site makeover took two years to complete due to budget constraints. A freelance web designer maintains the site and is budgeted to work on it for just six hours per week.

"That's why it has taken so long," said Kinder. "We've been working on this for two years, but we've only had six hours per week."

Another new feature allows parents or guardians to subscribe to e-mail newsletters from individual schools, as well as a weekly school calendar newsletter for all schools.

As more turned to Internet, a better website became necessary

"We've had a change in demographic and a change in our community. People aren't picking up the phone. They're looking for school information on the Internet," said Kinder. "So we really needed to make these changes."

As for initial feedback on the new features, Kinder noted one welcome response. "I've noticed a marked decrease in the number of people writing to tell me how awful the site is," she said.

Escolas Lançam Novo Site

As Escolas Públicas de Somerville informam usuários que seu site está mais navegável.

Mudanças: Melhor calendário, navegação e tours de video

Entre outras coisas, mudanças incluem calendário renovado, melhor presentação de informações sobre professores e acesso simples à programas escolares. Também adicionadoss foram video tours.

"Isso tudo começou porque recebemos diversas reclamações sobre quão ruim o site estava," disse Kinder. "Então começamos um processo para recolher idéias comunitárias para remontar o site desde o começo."

Uma das mudanças que a administração ficou surpresa em saber foi incluir menu de navegação no ladoesquero do site, com mais links para o conteúdo da página.

"Estes links sempre estiveram disponíveis no fim de cada página. Mas fiquei sabendo que tem pessoas que gostam de ir até o fim das páginas, e outras que gostam de clicar no começo—e só um dos dois tipos acham os links no fim da página. As pessoas que gostam de clicar no começo acabam pensando que os links não estão lá," disse Kinder. "Estamos fazendo mais simples para que todo mundo possa achar os links no topo da página."

Mudanças demoraram dois anos por causa de falta de verba

Um web designer freelance mantém o site e tem verba suficiente pra trabalhar por somente seis horas por semana. Mas renovar o site demorou dois anos por falta de verba.

"É por isso que demorou tanto," disse Kinger. "Estamos trabalhando no site por dois anos, mas só tivemos seis horas por semana."

Outro recurso do site ajuda pais e guardiões a receber notícias por e-mail sobre cada escola, e também um calendário semanal de todas as escolas.

Com mais usuários, um site melhor ficou mais necessário

"Tivemos uma mudança na nossa comunidade. As pessoas não atendem mais o telefone. Agora elas procuram por informação na Internet," disse Kinder. "Estamos tentando fazer essas mudanças."

Por enquanto, Kinder notou comentário positivo. "Notei que o número de pessoas me escrevendo pra dizer quão ruim o site é tem diminuido," ela disse.
