Plans for a new library building in Union stalled have stalled after Somerville officials rejected an $18M grant.

Plans for a new main library in Union Square have stalled after Somerville officials missed the deadline to match an $18 million state grant, according to a Wicked Local report.

The city originally wanted to move the Somerville Central Library from its Highland Avenue location to a new spot in Union Square, the report stated. But while officials still want the library to be part of Union Square, they don’t want it to be part of the first seven blocks to be released and developed in the fall, the report added.

Ward 5 Alderman Mark Niedergang still hopes the library is part of Union Square’s new look, the report stated. He said Somerville residents would like to see a mix of the library, civic space and SCATV in Union Square, the report added.
