Somerville, Cambridge Launch Joint Immigrant Defense Fund

The fund will be used to provide legal services for asylum seekers, families with young children and trafficking victims.

SOMERVILLE, MA – The cities of Somerville and Cambridge on Monday announced the creation of the United Legal Defense Fund for Immigrants, a joint initiative from Mayor Joseph Curtatone, Mayor Marc McGovern and the Cambridge Community Foundation.

The fund will be used to provide legal services for asylum seekers, families with young children and trafficking victims. It was launched a year after the founding of the Cambridge Legal Defense Fund for Immigrants, which was expanded to Somerville to meet an "urgent and growing need," according to a city of Somerville press release.

Both mayors announced the fund Monday morning at Cambridge City Hall.
