Somerville High Will Supply Free Feminine Products After Student Push

A student-led effort sparked questions about the availability of products in the girls' bathrooms.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Somerville High School will begin offering feminine hygiene products in the girls' bathrooms after three seniors led a campaign to increase the availability of tampons and pads. Samantha Fillmore, Vivian Ferraz and Katia Matthews undertook the project after questioning why feminine products were solely available in the nurse's office.

Thus, S.A.F.E.T.Y. – Safely Accommodating Free Equity with Tampons Yearly – was born. And it's sparking real change at Somerville High School.

According to the Somerville Journal, Superintendent Mary Skipper sent an email on Monday confirming dispensing units will be installed in the coming weeks.

The seniors' campaign was a dual effort to decrease the stigma surrounding menstruation and solve a problem of gender inequality at the school. They created a campaign video and circulated a petition asking the Somerville Public Schools Board Committee to approve funding for free hygiene products in the girls' bathroom for every female, transgender and gender-fluid student.
