Somerville Man Awarded For Helping To Save Drowning Man

The off-duty sheriff's lieutenant jumped into the Charles River after bystanders alerted him to a man face down in the water.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A Somerville man was awarded for his role in saving a person from drowning in the Charles River 2016. M. Ross Klun, 45, received the Carnegie Hero award for helping to save the man, who was found face down in an inlet in Cambridge on Oct. 30, 2016.

Klun, an off-duty sheriff's lieutenant, was driving down the highway when bystanders alerted him to the man in the river. He and Catherine Kinyua, a 24-year-old paralegal, both jumped into the 53-degree water to help the man.

Klun revived the 32-year-old and pulled him to the bulkhead, where Kinyua helped hold him up while treading water. A police boat responding to the scene brought Klun, Kinyua and the man aboard and took the man to the hospital. Klun and Kinyua were not injured.
