Somerville MCAS 2017 Scores: Math Sees Big Jump

Here are the results for students in grades 3-8 and 10th graders.

SOMERVILLE, MA – This year's MCAS procedure is confusing at best. To read up on all the changes, click here.

In short, a "new" MCAS test was administered to public school students in grades 3-8. Among the changes are a new scoring system that says whether students were exceeding, meeting, partially meeting, or not meeting expectations.

The "old" MCAS was taken by 10th grade students. The scoring system graded students as advanced, proficient, needs improvement, or warning/failing.

The subjects were math, English, and science. The science portion was only administered to students in grades 5, 8, and 10.

For Somerville, you can see how students in grades 3-8 did by searching The Boston Globe's database here. Click what grade and subject you want, and type "Somerville" into the search bar.

The 10th grade numbers are a bit easier to digest. Here are the percentage of students among Somerville High and Full Circle High School 10th graders who scored advanced, proficient, needs improvement, and warning/failing.

  • In math, there were 51 advanced, 25 proficient, 16 needs improvement, and 8 warning/failing. That is an impressive 9 percent jump from last year in advanced scoring. Scores were not measured for Full Circle High School.
  • In English, there were 49 advanced, 40 proficient, 7 needs improvement, and 4 warning/failing at Somerville High School. That is a 4 percent boost in students scoring advanced. Full Circle High School saw 10 percent advanced, 70 proficient, 20 needs improvement and 0 warning/failing.
  • In science, there were 34 advanced, 40 proficient, 23 needs improvement, and 3 warning/failing. That is a 6 percent boost in advanced scoring. Scores were not measured for Full Circle.
