Somerville Restaurant Closes, Citing Financial Woes And GLX Work

A longtime Ball Square eatery that recently saw some radical changes is calling it quits.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A longtime Ball Square restaurant is closing, due in part to Green Line Extension work, according to a statement on the eatery's website. Sassafras, once the popular pizza and sub shop Eat at Jumbo's, rebranded itself last year with an entirely meat-free menu.

It's now closing, citing financial troubles and the Broadway bridge closure.

"It's with a heavy heart that we unfortunately have decided to close. Because as it stands now, we have become a financially unsustainable business," a statement on the Sassafras website reads. "The closure of the Broadway Bridge only adds to that issue. We have sadly decided to close our doors and are taking steps to evaluate our future. We appreciate our loyal customers and thank you for your support of Sassafras and Eat at Jumbos over the years."
