Walnut Street Center Helping Victims of Domestic Violence

The trainees from the Walnut Street Center Day Program teamed up with Verizon Wireless HopeLine in March this year to help victims of domestic violence.  The trainees started a cell phone drive at the Charlestown Street loation in Somerville to collect old and broken cell phones to donate.  The HopeLine program refurbishes the phones and gives them to victims of domestic violence so they always have a way to reach out for help.  So far the trainees have collected almost 100 phones and plan to continue the drive to collect even more.  Matt. P, one of the trainees was very excited to be part of this project. "I feel lucky that I have Walnut Street Center to help me but I know a lot of people aren't as lucky as me.  I really hope that we can help others by collecting these phones".  When asked how many phones he would like to collect he said, "a thousand if possible.  The more phones we collect the more people we can help".  The original plan was to run the cell phone drive for one month but given the success so far and the enthusiasm of the trainees participating in this project the cell phone drive will be continued for the next few months.

If you have any old or broken cell phones that you would like to donate they can be dropped off at 35 Charlestown Street in Somerville.
