Water Main Break Shuts Off Service, Closes Road In Somerville

SOMERVILLE, MA — The city responded to a water main break Friday morning that temporarily shut off water service to dozens of addresses and forced the closure of a section of Boston Street.

City officials told Patch that a water leak was reported at approximately 5 a.m. in the area of Boston Street and Munroe Street on June 19. Upon inspection, crews discovered a break in the main pipe on Boston Street and called in a local construction partner to assist with repairs.

The break sent water shooting into the air and scattered rocks and debris across the surrounding area. Residents told local news outlets that debris damaged vehicles and nearby properties, while a nearby liquor store reportedly sustained flooding in its basement.

Boston Street was temporarily closed while crews worked to repair the pipe. The roadway later reopened after repairs were completed.

While work was ongoing, water service was shut off to the following addresses:

• 163-179 Washington St. (odd-numbered addresses only)
• 1-4 Munroe St.
• 1-30 Boston St.
• 406 McGrath Highway
• 5-24 Prospect Hill Ave. (excluding No. 9)

According to the city, water service was restored to all affected properties by approximately 1 p.m.

A water main break occurs when a water pipe cracks or ruptures underground, allowing water to escape to the surface. Breaks can result in service interruptions, flooding, traffic disruptions and property damage. The cause of Friday's break has not yet been announced.
