📰 News we're reading

1. MGM and Springfield Head to Court as Casino Sale Dispute Deepens (igamingtoday.com) — Springfield officials have taken MGM Resorts to Hampden Superior Court, arguing the company hasn't met key promises tied to MGM Springfield, including job levels, gaming operations, and refurbishing 101 State Street. MGM counters that the city is stalling a proposed sale to a new operator, leaving the casino's future ownership and downtown commitments hanging on how this legal fight is resolved.

2. "Cyber incident" forces Springfield, Massachusetts, schools to close Tuesday (cbsnews.com) — Springfield Public Schools are closed today after a cyber incident disrupted key systems needed for safe operations, and staff and students are being told to stay off district networks. Central office remains open but services may be limited while officials investigate the breach, develop backup plans, and work to restore technology that supports daily school functions.

3. Prices at the pump climbing over Labor Day weekend (wwlp.com) — Drivers in Springfield are paying noticeably more at the pump this Labor Day weekend, with the local average price per gallon up $1.08 from a year ago. AAA says an unusual late-summer price surge, tied to international tensions, could keep costs rising. Residents planning trips may want to budget extra for fuel in the coming weeks.

4. Rising diesel prices could drive up costs of everyday items (wwlp.com) — Rising diesel prices are hitting Springfield directly, with the local average now at $5.83 per gallon and pushing up the cost of shipping and everyday goods. Local truck operators are changing habits to save fuel, and experts warn there's little sign of relief. Residents may see higher grocery and household prices as transportation costs continue climbing statewide.

5. 2 people killed in western Massachusetts plane crash (cbsnews.com) — Two people were killed when a small plane crashed Saturday night in a wooded area off Center Street in Ludlow, just over 10 miles from Springfield. State and local police, along with federal investigators, are examining the scene and have not yet released the victims' names or flight details.
