5-Year Plan Calls for Stoneham High School to Get a New Look

Stoneham Public Schools officials need to decide whether to rehab the current building or construct a new facility.

A draft of the Stoneham Public Schools’s five-year capital calls for either a renovation or a rebuilding of Stoneham High School, according to a Stoneham Independent report.

Superintendent Les Olson presented the draft last week during the Stoneham School Committee meeting, the report stated. The cost of rebuilding the school is estimated at around $100 million, while refurbishing the school would run about $30 million, the report added.

What direction the school system chooses to go will depend on whether its third request for state reimbursement is approved, the report stated. Officials should receive an answer by either September or December the report added.

Olson has recommended that a new high school be built, saying $30 million wouldn’t be enough to upgrade a building as old as the Stoneham High School facility is, the report stated.
