Rep. Day Hosts Upcoming Senior Charlie Card Event
Nov. 3 event will be held at Stoneham Senior Center; Plans for similar event in Winchester in 2018.

A release from State Representative Michael Day:
As part of his continued efforts to expand public transportation options and help seniors to continue to live independently in their community, State Representative Michael Day, in partnership with the MBTA and the Council on Aging, will sponsor an event at the Stoneham Senior Center for all local seniors to receive a discounted senior pass for use on the MBTA system. All resident seniors 65 years or older are encouraged to attend; applications will be accepted at the Stoneham Senior Center, 136 Elm Street in Stoneham from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3. To be eligible, seniors must present a government issued photo ID.
“I appreciate the MBTA’s assistance in working with me and the Council on Aging to bring this program directly to our community instead of forcing seniors to travel into Boston to apply for this discount program,” said Representative Day. “I hope the seniors in our community come down and take advantage of the increased services we are bringing home.”
“The Council on Aging is so appreciative of Representative Day’s commitment to seniors in our community,” said Stoneham Senior Center Director Maureen Canova. “His understanding of the transportation challenges we face has been instrumental in making progress. Bringing this program to the Senior Center will assist in reminding residents of their transportation options and the discounts available to them.”
A Senior Charlie Card allows the holder to ride local buses for 85 cents, subways for $1.10, inner express buses for $2.50, and outer express buses for $3.50. Seniors can also travel on commuter rail or ferry services for 50 percent off the regular full fare. In addition, seniors can purchase a monthly pass which is good for unlimited travel on local buses and subways for $30. No discounts apply to express bus passes, commuter rail passes, or boat passes.
Representative Day will sponsor refreshments at the event, which is free to attend. Representative Day is also working with the Winchester Council on Aging to host a similar event at the Jenks Center in Winchester in early 2018. Those with questions are encouraged to contact Representative Day at Michael.Day@mahouse.gov or 617.722.2210 or the Stoneham Council on Aging at 781.438.1157.
