Stoneham Medal of Honor Recipient Honored on Memorial Day
Stoneham's Gardner Hawkins was one of four Medal of Honor heroes honored by a contingent of uniformed members of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts on Memorial Day.

"Hawkins gravesite in was visited by the 'Ancients' and also by (Stoneham) Selectmen John DePinto and Thomas Boussy," reads the statement.
The tributes across Massachusetts took place at the gravesites of Hawkins, Lowell Maxham, Francis Snow Hesseltine and George H. Maynard, according to the statement.

"All of these individuals received their medals for actions during the Civil War, were members of the 'Ancients,' and are interred in different cemeteries in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," reads the statement. "The ceremonies included wreath laying, placement of flower baskets and United States, Massachusetts, Medal of Honor Recipient, and Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company flags.
"In addition, remarks were read by the Company’s 1st Lieutenant Francis Magaletta, reading of citations by 2nd Lieutenant Leon LeBlanc of Wells, Maine, and the playing of taps by 1st (Sergeant) Scott Carriere, Deputy Chief of (Peabody) Police Police (Department)."
