Town Meeting has spoken via a no vote on the trash fee holiday article. In the short amount of time between then and now, there has been much noise from the disgruntled minority. The article was a bad idea. The voters voted it down. We weren’t misled into voting it down, and it was not the Moderator’s fault.
The recent post, “What’s next for the trash fee”, is a disgrace. For the maker of the article to say, “if I had been allowed to speak” is absolutely outrageous. Not only did she speak, but she had someone on the front steps handing out “vote yes” flyers to everyone who attended. Attempting to justify underfunding our rainy day account because there are others in worse shape is a frightening statement to hear from someone who occupies a leadership position in our town.
Ms. Colarusso was a member of the Finance Board when their fiscal guidelines were last revised in December of 2012, and held the position for years after that, until her election to the Board of Selectmen. She should be well aware that free cash is recommended to be used for capital expenses, and not for trash disposal costs. As a member of the Board of Selectmen for the past three years, she should also be aware that the existence and the amount of the trash fee is under the authority of the Board of Selectmen and is not something that Town Meeting can vote to eliminate, temporarily or permanently.

The constant barrage of negativity from Ms. Colarusso and friends in regard to the failed attempts for a trash fee holiday needs to stop. The deceptive statements in support of the issue, an insult to the intelligence of the people of this town, must stop. The insults being hurled at the other members of the Board of Selectmen must stop. The mean and vicious attacks directed at the Town Moderator must stop. Stop dividing this town with the regurgitation of negativity over an issue that has already been decided upon by the voters at Town Meeting.
