STOUGHTON, MA — A house fire on Bay Road was caused by the "improper disposal" of a cigarette, according to state and local fire officials. Fire Chief Michael Laracy and State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey announced the cause of fire in a joint statement Monday. The two-alarm fire took Stoughton and neighboring firefighters almost three hours to put out because there weren't any fire hydrants on the street, Deputy Fire Chief Scott Breen said.

Around 6:15 p.m., fire officals were called to the 2000th block of Bay Road to battle the flames. Water tankers needed to be brought in from Canton and Sharon. Firefighters from Easton, Canton, Walpole and Sharon helped extinguish the flames while Randolph and Holbrook officials covered the station.

"It was a hard fire to put out with a lack of water and a long response time," Breen told Patch. "It had a good head start. The crews had to work really hard, and they all did a good job."

Breen said a resident and two caretakers were in the house during the fire. Both were evacuated and no one suffered injuries, but one of the caregivers had a medical issue after and was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.

The home, which assessors told the Brockton Enterprise was valued at $429,700, suffered about $300,000 worth of damage, according to Breen's estimate.
