Dog Dies After Swimming At Ames Pond, Stoughton Officials Investigate

STOUGHTON, MA — Town health officials are investigating after a dog that swam at Ames Pond died this week.

The Stoughton Board of Health said Friday that its staff and environmental health agents are looking into the death. Officials advised residents to keep pets out of the pond for now while monitoring and testing continue.

Ames Pond beach is tested weekly under state requirements for recreational bathing beaches. No E. coli exceedances have been detected there this season, according to the board.

Officials said those results do not rule out the possibility that an algae bloom occurred. Algae blooms can develop rapidly under certain conditions, cause illness in people and be deadly to pets.

The board did not say whether an algae bloom had been confirmed or whether the dog’s death had been linked to the pond. Officials said they will continue testing the water and report any exceedances.
