Sudbury Mosquito Spraying Planned Amid West Nile Virus Advisory

Mosquito spraying is scheduled in parts of town as health officials warn residents to take precautions against mosquito-borne illness.

SUDBURY, MA — Mosquito spraying is scheduled in parts of Sudbury next week as health officials warn residents to take precautions against mosquito-borne illness.

The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project plans to spray areas of Sudbury on Tuesday, July 21, between sunset and 11:30 p.m. using a truck-mounted aerosol sprayer. The spraying comes after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in nearby communities.

Spraying is scheduled near Powder Mill Road, Powers Road, Dakin Road, North Road, Ford Road, Mossman Road, Haynes Road, Pantry Road, Morse Road, Thompson Drive and Belcher Drive. The project said the listed roads are general area descriptions and spray routes will include more roads than those named.

The product being used is Zenivex E4, which the project said is classified by the EPA as a reduced-risk pesticide.

Mosquito control applications of Zenivex E4 do not pose a significant risk to people or pets due to the product’s low toxicity and the small amounts used. Residents are advised to minimize exposure, go indoors for a few minutes if they see a spray truck approaching and close windows while spraying is underway.

This comes as the West Nile Virus was detected in nearby communities, including Hudson and Marlborough.

Sudbury health officials said West Nile virus is a health concern from now through early October. Although the chances of acquiring the virus are remote, it can cause fever, meningitis or encephalitis. Early symptoms can include fever, headache, stiff neck and muscle weakness.

Residents are advised to use mosquito repellent, wear protective clothing, repair holes in screens and remove standing water around their properties. Mosquitoes commonly breed in neglected swimming pools, loose pool covers, tarps, unscreened rain barrels, tires and plastic toys, according to the advisory.

Questions about mosquitoes or mosquito control can be directed to the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project at (781) 899-5730. The spray schedule is available here.
