Election Results: Gentile Wins 13th Middlesex Race

SUDBURY, MA — State Rep. Carmine Gentile will return to the state House after fending off a challenge from Republican Ingrid Centurion.

The Associated Press called the race for Gentile early Wednesday morning. He defeated Centurion by close to 40 percent, according to unofficial election results. Overall, Gentile earned 17,247 votes (68.9 percent) to Centurion's 7,784 (31.1 percent) in a district that spans Framingham, Sudbury, Marlborough and Wayland.

Here's how the race looked in each part of the 13th Middlesex District:

Framingham (1 precinct only)

• Gentile — 1,469 votes, 72.15%
• Centurion — 567 votes, 27.85%

Marlborough

• Gentile — 3,337 votes, 62.58%
• Centurion — 1,995 votes, 37.42%

Sudbury

• Gentile — 8,022 votes, 69.39%
• Centurion — 3,538 votes, 30.61%

Wayland

• Gentile — 4,419 votes, 72.41%
• Centurion — 1,684 votes, 27.59%

In a statement late Tuesday night, Gentile thanked voters and pledged to work on a host of issues.

"Now we go forward and continue the work to put the pandemic behind us, re-build our economy, pass the ROE Act preserving a woman's right to choose, Police Reform and Racial Justice, prevent thousands of evictions, help our small landlords, protect the most vulnerable among us, transition the Commonwealth to 100% renewable clean energy, provide excellent education for all our children regardless of their zip codes, the list goes on," Gentile told Patch via email.

Centurion, a Sudbury resident, cast her self as a business-friendly candidate, but faced an uphill battle against a well-known incumbent with deeper financial resources.

Gentile hasn't faced a challenge in any election since the 2014 Democratic primary, and Centurion is the first Republican to run for the 13th Middlesex seat since 2014. Gentile also out-raised Centurion, ending September with about $30,000 on hand to Centurion's $15,000.

Gentile spent the day before Election Day at an event in Marlborough with U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan, Framingham Mayor Yvonne Spicer, and state Legislature colleagues Sen. Jamie Eldridge and state Rep. Danielle Gregoire.

"Go blue up and down the ballot!" Gentile tweeted on Monday.
