“This has been a unique year for us,” Warriors coach Heath Umbach said. “Our program has grown to 40 wrestlers, which is outstanding, but over seventy percent of them are new to wrestling! This underscores the importance of the program’s mission to grow the sport by introducing amateur folkstyle wrestling to Lincoln, Sudbury, and surrounding communities. Last week we hosted a tri-meet against Concord-Carlisle Youth Wrestling and Leominster Youth Wrestling, which brought over 60 kids to the LS wrestling room. Between that event and the Deeley Tournament, our kids have wrestled in over 100 matches in the span of three days! The coaches couldn’t be happier with the squad’s commitment and improvement so far this season.”
Lincoln-Sudbury Youth Wrestling is a non-profit organization run by volunteer coaches and is one of over 75 such clubs in Massachusetts affiliated with the MA Youth Wrestling Association. The team includes wrestlers from Lincoln, Sudbury, and surrounding towns. The primary goal of the program is to introduce 2nd - 8th graders to amateur folkstyle wrestling in a competitive environment, foster a young wrestler's potential through their commitment to the sport, and act as a feeder program for the LS High School wrestling team. In addition to Umbach, the team is coached by Ray Isales, Patrick Hurley, Joe Mueller, and Dylan Remley. You can find out more about the program at www.sudburywrestling.com.
