SUDBURY, MA — Just a few months ago, Sudbury was headed toward a pretty normal spring election.

And then coronavirus hit.

The postponed spring election will take place Tuesday. The candidates are the same as before the pandemic, but other aspects of voting will be different. Here's a refresher on the election before polls open.

New polling hours

The town has approved reduced voting hours due to the pandemic. Voting will take place from noon to 8 p.m. instead of the usual start time of 7 a.m. at Town Hall, 332 Concord Road. If you're feeling sick, town officials do not want you to go to the polls. Instead, call 978-639-3351 to see how you can vote from home.

Who's on the ballot

There are nine offices up for election this year, but only one — the Board of Selectmen — is contested. In that race, incumbent Pat Brown is vying to keep her seat against Conservation Commission member Charles Russo, who is running because he feels the Selectmen haven't acted quickly enough on recent town issues.

(Only two other races have more than one candidate running: Goodnow Library trustees and the Lincoln-Sudbury school committee. But voters can pick two in each of those races.)

Candidate profiles

Patch reached out to candidates running in the spring election and asked them to fill out our candidate questionnaire. We heard back from the two candidates in the contested Select Board race.

Absentee voting

Don't want to go to the polls on Tuesday because of coronavirus? Pretty much anyone can vote absentee this year including people who are sick, people who are in quarantine, and people who "are staying in your home or avoiding your polling place as a precautionary measure in response to COVID-19," according to the town.

You can download an absentee application on the town website and email it to the Town Clerk (townclerk@sudbury.ma.us). Applications are due by noon on Monday.

Election results

The Town Clerk will likely release preliminary election results Tuesday evening after polls close. Patch will report the results as soon as they are available.
