MaryEllen Fletcher is a Candidate for Swampscott Select Board

MaryEllen Fletcher has announced her candidacy for election to the Swampscott Select Board this April. MaryEllen aims to win one of two seats that are up for a vote this year.

“I love our town and the people in it. I’m passionate about community service, and I like to get things done. I want Swampscott to live up to the expectations of everyone who’s chosen to settle here, and I plan to make that happen by helping to shape policy as a member of the Select Board.”

Throughout her life, MaryEllen has embraced a myriad of leadership roles, including several civic commitments in Swampscott. Currently the Finance Committee’s Vice Chair and liaison to the Capital Improvement Committee and longtime town meeting member, MaryEllen is also a board member of the state’s Association of Town Finance Committees. She has served as Chair of the Recreation Commission, Chair of the Encore Food Assistance Program, and as a member on the Article 6 Committee and the Harbor and Waterfront Advisory Committee.

During her thirty-four years as a local, MaryEllen became guardian to and raised her niece, who attended Swampscott schools. As a parent, MaryEllen was a Girl Scout leader and a coach for both the softball and field hockey teams, all while running a successful business.

MaryEllen’s priorities are to: (1) reduce and preserve reasonable property taxes; (2) attract and retain a skilled workforce; (3) improve infrastructure, especially as it pertains to coastal protection and resilience; (4) facilitate access to affordable housing, while respecting open space; (5) prevent unreasonable and overarching development; (6) ensure resources for senior residents; (7) restore and maintain existing school structures; and (8) support the revitalization of small businesses.

“There’s plenty to be done. I’d be incredibly honored to represent Swampscott as a member of the Select Board. I can’t wait to speak with and listen to people from our wonderful community in the weeks leading up to the election. And, with enough support at the polls, I’ll be happy to welcome everyone’s continued input.”
