Swampscott Trash/Recycling Resumes After Vendor Issue, Holiday

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Trash and recycling pickup in Swampscott resumes as usual Tuesday after a vendor quit ahead of the Labor Day holiday. Republic Services is the town's new trash contractor, replacing Hiltz Waste Disposal, which abruptly pulled out of Swampscott and several other North Shore communities.

Company President Deborah Hiltz said the company is downsizing but will continue operating. She called the move "difficult but necessary for the continued viability of the company." Hiltz said laid-off workers were given severance packages. The company is based in Gloucester.

“Many of our drivers and laborers have been with us for many years,” Hiltz said in a statement. “They know the routes for the various towns and would be a great asset to any company that hires them.”

The move left communities scrambling to find new vendors; Marblehead officials recently found a new contractor.
