Free System Checks for Leaks

Water meter recently replaced? Sign up for the town's EyeOnWater monitor to check for any leaks. It has helped many residents save money.

The town’s EyeOnWater system gives customers secure access to their household or business water-use information through a smartphone app and online portal. The service allows users to see how much water they are consuming and can alert them when their usage suggests a possible leak.

One of the challenges for homeowners is that water leaks aren't necessarily dramatic or easy to spot.

A running toilet may quietly waste water around the clock. A broken underground sprinkler connection can send hundreds of gallons into the ground without leaving an obvious puddle.

The program provides residents with an immediate look at their water consumption rather than requiring them to wait until the next bill arrives.

The app displays daily consumption and by month, week, date and time of day. Users can compare their current water use with previous periods and view graphs showing changes in consumption.

Despite the information available through EyeOnWater, the town reports that only about 4% of customers with upgraded meters have signed up for the service.

The EyeOnWater program is part of the Tewksbury Water Division's broader effort to upgrade water-meter transmission units, or MTUs, throughout town.

The replacement program began in November 2024, with MTUs being replaced by Water Division employees and contractor Hydro Utilities.

Residents have received notices about the meter-replacement program, including information about scheduling appointments. Anyone who has received a final notice stating “Mandatory Action Needed” has already received two previous notices from the town.

The DPW is reminding those residents that the MTU replacement needs to be completed to ensure the accuracy of the utility billing process.

Residents with questions about the meter replacement program can contact the Tewksbury DPW at 978-640-4440.
