MCC Students Earn AA Degrees While Completing a BA

It’s not often students can be awarded a degree after they leave a college, but a Reverse Transfer agreement between Middlesex Community College and UMass Lowell is making that happen.

The MCC/UML Reverse Transfer pilot program was launched in 2013. It allows qualified students who have earned at least 15 credits at Middlesex and transferred to UML (where they have earned at least 60 combined credits), to be awarded an associate degree while working on a bachelor’s degree.

Reverse Transfer is a unique opportunity for former Middlesex students, explained MCC Registrar Daniel Moynihan. “There is great benefit to having an AA degree on your academic record,” he said. “While these students are working to complete their bachelor’s degree, they will have their associate degree as part of their resume.”

“Last year, 99 Reverse Transfer students were awarded degrees,” said Audrey Nahabedian, MCC Dean of Enrollment Management. “This year’s Class of 2014, 45 students have applied for Reverse Transfer,” she added.

The entire Reverse Transfer process is a collaboration at every level, added Nahabedian. “This not only requires us to work hand-in-hand with UMass Lowell, but it’s a collaboration at Middlesex, too,” she stressed. “Our Enrollment Management, and Academic & Student Affairs departments work together throughout the process. We even waive the graduation fee, so it doesn’t cost the students anything to receive their AAs.”

“I talked with a few Reverse Transfer students at graduation and they were very happy,” said Nahabedian. “Having that degree can really help with their careers. They didn’t know Reverse Transfer was even an option.”
