40 Wakefield Stores Extending Hours Next Week

Some local businesses are extending their hours until 8 p.m. from June 20th to the 24th as part of the "Summer Nights Shopping Spree," a week-long event intended to help connect consumers with local businesses.

Now that summer is here, the days are longer, the weather's warmer, and life is good. What better way to use those extra hours than to shop?

To that end, as many as 40 Wakefield businesses have signed on as part of the Wakefield Summer Night Shopping Spree Week,” where participating businesses have agreed to remain open until 8 p.m. each evening next week in an effort to make it easier for Wakefield residents to shop locally.

Spree Week begins Monday, June 20, 2011 and runs through Friday June 24, 2011, the week of the year with the longest hours of daylight, according to its organizer, Wakefield resident Brian Cavanuagh. Many of the participating businesses are offering special deals and promotions throughout the week and during the extended hours.

Cavanuagh said the idea for the event came about through the Wakefield Business Forum page on Facebook. Ideas were passed around and plans were solidified through the social networking site.

Brian’s wife, Diana, owns on Main Street. Cavanaugh said she felt that Spree Week would give residents who work out of town a chance to come in after work and experience the retail and dining options that the town provides.

When the Cavanaughs were asked what they hope comes of Spree Week their response was quick and definitive: They hope to bring new clients to local businesses and give stores the opportunity to evaluate if later hours would bring in more revenue.

The organizers said they received a great response with over 40 stores, studios, salons, boutiques, specialty shops, and restaurants participating.
