August 26 Market Day: Pop-Up Library, Live Music, Sale on Peaches - Farmer Dave's, Eclipse Glasses Collection, Fun for Kids

With perfect weather predicted, the summer harvest in full force, live music by Amy Spillert, and a visit by the Pop-Up Library, this Saturday looks to be a great day to spend at the market. The Wakefield Farmers Market takes place at Hall Park, on the shores of Lake Quannapowitt, each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through October 14, 2017. To give directions to a friend, just tell them to use 468 North Ave via GPS.

TAKE NOTE, it's time to VOTE! It is time to keep our market on the map via the American Farmland Trust Annual Farmers Market Celebration! Go to: markets.farmland.org and type in 01880, or use the handy link on our wakefieldfarmersmarket.org website to “recommend” our Wakefield Farmers Market. Last year our farmers market came in 1st in Massachusetts and #22 nationally in the “People’s Choice” and “Pillar of the Community” categories. The contest runs until September 22, at which time American Farmland Trust will present awards to the most endorsed markets in four special areas, as well as the “People’s Choice” award at the end of the Celebration.

The Wakefield Human Rights Commission (WHRC) is our nonprofit guest this week. WHRC’s mission is to promote the civil and human rights of all people in Wakefield, with the goal of reinforcing positive relationships in the community and to create educational programs to foster a greater understanding and appreciation for diversity. This group has already brought a Martin Luther King Day celebration and an International Women’s Day event to our town, both to be annual events. Stop by to learn about additional projects in the planning and how you can become involved in this important work.

Singer songwriter Amy Spillert is back this week, bringing her beautiful voice and music perfect fit any market day. Amy's music is folky and upbeat, with original songs inspired by the ocean, nature, history, love, and friendship. She also has a set of cover tunes that are a perfect fit for farmers markets, and fun family songs. Music will start around 10:00 a.m.

The Wakefield Beebe Library Pop Up Library is here for their monthly visits! Along with learning about the wonderful programs offered by the library, you can check out books, and even sign up for a library card if you don’t have one. I hear there will be plenty of cookbooks on hand for borrowing. NEWSFLASH: Stop by ay 10:30 for STORYTIME!

Suman Shah of Fork on a Road (forkonaroad.com) will in the Market Kitchen Tent to create a quick, easy, and tasty recipe or two featuring produce available at the market that morning. You will find the Market Kitchen tent to the left of the Market Manager tent. Cooking demos typically start around 10:00 a.m. Stop by to try a bite! Yarrow will be with us making his magic with balloons, the Kid’s Activity tent will be stocked with plenty of paper and crayons, and we always have hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, and jump ropes on hand for kids of all ages.

Trows Treasures – Will have a new salve, Dream Balm, that promotes sleep and dreaming. With mugwort, lavender, chamomile & rose.

Ackermann Maple Farm: After this week they will be taking time off until October because a baby is coming soon. So be sure to stock up!

Farmer Dave says: We will have a half off sale on peaches at the market this weekend– time to load up the freezer with awesome peaches for the winter. Keep an eye out for melon specials. The yellow watermelon is awesome! We are at peak pickling cucumber time- time to pickle!

And, don’t forget, SNAP folks can get their HIP benefits at Farmer Dave’s!

Emmett’s Edibles – Pumpkin Bon Bons is a great tasty treat that is also low in fat. Available in a training size too.

NEWSFLASH: Wondering what to do with you eclipse glasses? Jonathan of Sasquatch Woodworks is collecting them for donation to Astronomers Without Borders, (astronomerswithoutborders.org) a nonprofit organization founded in 2008 dedicated to spreading astronomy throughout the world, by getting people in developed countries to sponsor the purchase of equipment and training for people in undeveloped countries. The group's aim is to create "goodwill and understanding" across all boundaries through the sharing of astronomy. Just drop off your eclipse glasses at the Sasquatch Woodworks tent this Saturday. So easy!

Dried Legumes: Farmer Dave’s has Baer’s Beans!

Pasture-raised Meats, Poultry, and Eggs: As always, Lilac Hedge Farm has a great assortment of locally raised meats, poultry, and eggs, along with their local. honey. Charlton Orchards also always has eggs along with their other family farm fare.

NEWSFLASH: Michelle Kraft aka The Fish Lady cannot be here this week but will return next week on September 2. ALSO West River Creamery needs to take this and next week off but will be back on September 9.

Specialty Foods: Ackermann Maple Farm (last visit until October!) Deano's Pasta, Habibi Gourmet with Middle Eastern foods, and In Good Taste. Farmer Dave’s stand has dried apples, jarred sauces, and more made from their produce depending on the week. Charlton Orchards also has tasty jarred salsa, and jams, and pickles from their kitchen.

Baked Goods: Goodies Homemade, (caramel corn and cookies) Mamadou's Artisan Bakery, Swiss Bakers, (sandwiches, too) The Bread Shop, The Popover Lady (pies, too), and Roasted Granola, which also. offers local honey and locally made Greek yogurt.

Beverages: Aaronap Cellars (fine wine!) Tower Beverages, and Pour Man’s Coffee, the latter with the cold brew coffee and refreshing fruit and tea beverages around. They also have unique treats to enjoy at the market as well as Fair Trade coffee beans from Dean’s Beans to take home.

Pet Treats: Emmett’s Edibles has wholesome treats for dogs AND even some for cats!

Artisans: Sasquatch Woodworks will be here, along with Wakefield’s Trow’s Treasures.
