WAKEFIELD, Ma - The Wakefield Town Council voted, 4-3, Monday to turn Common Street into a one-way street. The change will take effect sometime in July.

The change effects Common going Southbound between Church and the intersection with Lafayette. The possibility of the change to Common has been a topic for months, including as part of the Envision Wakefield Downtown revitalization project. But the Traffic Advisory Committee made the recommendation to make Common one way on the face value of the benefits to Wakefield, not on its connection to Envision.

The three voting against the change, Mehreen Butt, Jonathan Chines, and Julie Smith-Galvin, all said the decision was rushed and more public input should be sought before a vote.

Chair Ed Dombroski supported the change but said that the Town Council could revisit the decision if the one-way street became an issue.
