In The Importance of Being Earnest Oscar Wilde pits reality against pretense in order to expose the superficiality of Victorian Era Britain. The truths of this classic comedy still resonate in 2012.

John Worthington, J. P, “Jack” (25 – 30): sincere, responsible and realistic

Algernon Moncrieff (25 – 30) “man about town”, great expounder of platitudes

Rev Canon Chasuble D.D. (45 60) agreeable and a bit dim

Merriman* (35 -55) Jack’s butler, steady and a bit apathetic

Lane* (35 – 55) Algernon’s man servant, “speaks” through tone and looks

Lady Bracknell (50 or over) opinionated, authoritative, keen-eyed and immovable

Gwendolyn Fairfax (18 – 23) young, impulsive girl, unafraid to challenge authority

Cecily Cardew (18) flighty, romantic girl, not enamored of reality

Miss Prism (45 – 60): Governess to Cecily, strict, devoted to the “old school”, transparent

*These are very small, but very important roles that require three dimensional portrayal. Time commitment is flexible.
