Fireworks Mishap Costs Woman Fingers In Wakefield

Police said a woman setting off M-100 fireworks lost several fingers Tuesday night.

WAKEFIELD, MA — A woman lost several fingers after setting off fireworks near Wakefield Common Tuesday night, police said.

Chief Rick Smith said police reported to the playground near the Common around 10:15 p.m. A woman in her 50's had lost several fingers while trying to set off M-100 fireworks.

"This is the second straight year that someone has been seriously hurt while using fireworks illegally," Smith said. "The town goes to great lengths to put on an organized fireworks display, so there is absolutely no excuse for putting yourself and others in harm’s way by setting fireworks off on your own."
