THE SAVINGS BANK PARTNERS WITH MASSACHUSETTS BANKERS ASSOCIATION AS HOSTS OF HIGH SCHOOL QUIZ SHOW IN SUPPORT OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION

The Massachusetts Bankers Association (MBA) and five co-sponsors, including The Savings Bank, recently hosted “Common Cents,” a financial education competition featuring high school students from around the state at the Massachusetts State House. This is the second year that The Savings Bank has participated as a partner in the program. In addition to participating in “Common Cents,” the students were greeted by State Representative Donald H. Wong (9th Essex District) and took a tour of the State House arranged for them by the local legislator.

This innovative financial education quiz-show was hosted by radio celebrity Ashlee Feldman of JAM’N 94.5; New England Cable News (NECN) anchor Mike Nikitas; and financial expert Jeffrey Fuhrer, executive vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The program also included special guest appearances by Matt Chatham, former New England Patriot and three-time Super Bowl Champion; Deborah Goldberg, Massachusetts Treasurer; and Sal DiDomenico of the Massachusetts State Senate.

The event featured 100 high school students, including nine students from Wakefield High School and 12 students from Lynnfield High School who were invited to attend by The Savings Bank. Participating schools included Barnstable High School; Dearborn STEM Academy, Boston; Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, South Yarmouth, Mass.; Haverhill High School; and Jeremiah Burke High School, Boston, in addition to Lynnfield High School and Wakefield High School.

The competition was videotaped and will be made available in early March 2017 to schools and teachers statewide as a teaching tool. The program will also be distributed to local cable access channels so the general public can benefit from viewing it. When it is launched, teachers, students and the public will be able to view the program at www.masscommoncents.com.

Hosted by the Massachusetts Bankers Association, the SUM- Surcharge Free ATM program, and Common Cents-sponsoring banks, Bank of America; Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank; Haverhill Bank; and The Savings Bank, the “Common Cents” quiz show supports expanding efforts to install financial education programs in all high schools in the Bay State and give students the personal finance skills necessary to succeed in life.

“Young adults, whether they go on to college or not, often struggle with their finances,” said Daniel J. Forte, president of the MBA. “We are all making a concerted effort to educate our future and current consumers about finance. The Common Cents quiz show provides an effective and engaging way for high school students to gain valuable financial knowledge.”

The Massachusetts Bankers Association represents approximately 160 commercial, savings and co-operative banks and savings and loan institutions in Massachusetts and elsewhere in New England.
