Senator Lewis Secures Funding For the Albion Cultural Exchange

$100,000 will go to update the public arts venue and bring more people into downtown Wakefield.

A release from the office of State Senator Jason Lewis:

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Senate has passed its version of the Fiscal Year 2019 state budget, and
Senator Jason Lewis is pleased to announce the passage of a budget amendment to support the development
of a cultural and arts center in downtown Wakefield.

Senator Lewis secured a budget amendment for $100,000 in funding which will contribute to facilities
improvements at the Albion Cultural Exchange, a public arts space which the Town of Wakefield has

“Improving the local arts landscape will support artists and local businesses, by providing space for artists to
work on and showcase their projects and by increasing foot traffic in our commercial downtown,” said
Senator Lewis. “Thriving downtowns and vibrant cultural life in our communities rely upon strong
relationships between the Commonwealth and local leaders and stakeholders, and I’m pleased that the Senate
Budget reflects the Legislature’s commitment to the growth of strong local arts programs around
Massachusetts.”

“During the past two years, we have used an outdated building to host events from art shows to concerts,”
said Stephen Maio, Wakefield Town Administrator. “The money included by Senator Lewis is vital in
updating this venue so we can offer more programs which will bring more patrons to our downtown, helping
to increase business in our local economy. We thank Senator Lewis for his support of our efforts in this
venture as well as his consistent support of the Town of Wakefield.”

With the passage of the FY19 budget in the Senate, both the Senate and the Massachusetts House of
Representatives have named conference committee members who will work to draft a final budget,
compromising on differences between the two houses. That final budget will then go to Governor Charles
Baker’s desk for his signature.

Fiscal Year 2019 begins on July 1, 2018.
