FEMA recently released updated flood maps for communities throughout Middlesex and Essex Counties, including Wakefield. Flood maps, officially called Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMS), are used for many purposes. In addition to floodplain management and planning, they are used when issuing flood insurance.

Voters at our May Town Meeting have the opportunity to adopt the new flood map, which would have a July 8, 2025, effective date.

Community members who would like to preview these maps prior to Town Meeting can view them online or at the Engineering Department in Town Hall, 1 Lafayette Street. A review of the proposed maps will take place at Town Meeting prior to the vote.

If you have questions about these maps in advance of Town Meeting, contact the Public Works Engineering Division at (781) 246-6301 x3.
