Wakefield Judo Athlete Medals at Cuba Tournament

The athlete took a bronze medal at the tournament.

WAKEFIELD, MA—A Wakefield-based Judoka took third prize at an international judo tournament in Cuba over the weekend.

Kayla Harrison captured the bronze medal in the U 78kg. division at the Havana Grand Prix tournament.Harrison is the defending Olympic champion from the 2012 London games.

“For any U.S. athlete, except Kayla Harrison, a bronze medal would be an amazing performance,” said Jimmy Pedro, U.S. Olympic Judo coach and owner of Pedro’s Judo Center to Wicked Local Wakefield.”But the reigning Olympic champion wants to win gold and beat everyone at every event. Every match leading into Rio is just practice and helps us prepare when it matters most.”
