The Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Depart. has been notified of a scam involving a caller who fraudulently claims to represent the WMGLD

The Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Department has been notified of a scam involving a caller who fraudulently claims to represent the WMGLD. The caller tells the customer that their meter needs to be changed and that an employee will be coming to their home. The caller also requests account and personal information in order to change the meter. “If you get a call from someone regarding a meter change, please do NOT give the individual ANY of your account or personal information,” WMGLD General Manager Pete Dion said. “This is a scam that is attempting to gather personal and/or financial information from the customer.” “If the WMGLD is going to perform a meter change, we will already have all the information we need.” Customers who are in doubt of a phone call they receive from the WMGLD are encouraged to get the name of the caller, hang up the phone and call the WMGLD at 781-246-6363 to verify that it was a valid call from WMGLD. Customers are also reminded that they will not receive a call after regular business hours, and that the WMGLD does not have a 1-800 or other toll-free number. Anyone asking you to call back on a 1-800 number is not WMGLD-related and is a scam. WMGLD customers are also asked to alert friends and neighbors about the latest scam. For additional information, or to alert the WMGLD to a possible scam, please call 781-246-6363.
