The Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light has been alerted of a new scam
The Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light has been alerted of a new scam involving a caller who claims to be a WMGLD employee. The caller advises the customer that the electric and/or gas meter in the home or business needs to be changed and payment is required to make that change.
WMGLD General Manager Pete Dion reminds customers to be wary of unsolicited calls claiming to be from WMGLD, especially if the caller requests that payment be made in advance in the form of an electronic money order or digital currency, such as bitcoins.
“Please do not pay these scammers in any form of currency,” the General Manager said. “These calls are not from the WMGLD; we do not have a toll free number, nor do we ask for payment to replace a meter. The WMGLD will never ask for personal or account information when initiating calls to our customers.”
