WMGLD Announces Essay Contest Winners

The Wakefield Municipal Gas & Light Department (WMGLD) recently selected winners of the 8th annual WMGLD Energy Conservation Essay Contest. Galvin Middle School 5th graders Lucas Kehoe, Spencer Little, Ojas Singhvi, Olivia Goff, Jane Leras and Alexandra Baldwin, and St. Joseph’s School 5th grader Gabriella Minasian were recently honored at an awards celebration at Wakefield Community Access Television studios in Wakefield. The seven winning essays were selected from among more than 250 essays submitted by fifth graders at the Galvin Middle School and St. Joseph’s School following a visit to their schools by WMGLD General Manager Pete Dion. A total of 37 students, representing 34 Galvin Middle School students and three student from St. Joseph’s School, were selected as semi-finalists by a panel of judges which included teachers and WMGLD representatives. In addition to the six winners from the Galvin Middle School, 28 students were also selected as semi-finalists from the school: Lindsay Burke, Ryan Sallee, Sam Bangston, Merilee Jewett, Madison Nett, Caileigh Sweeney, Ashley Carter, Tommy Grover, Sean Doherty, Abbey Fitzpatrick, Ria Patel, Benjamin Stratton, Joseph Colliton, Jessica Pan, Peter Pietryka, Drew Schermerhorn, Abby Medur, Summer Milsky, Caroline Guanci, John Porter, Jenna Rossi, Benjamin Lamarre, Maya Plant, Sara Pudvah, Angel Salvo, Emma Callahan, Katherine Taylor and Jade Medina. In addition to the St. Joseph School winner, the semi-finalists include Mia Mercurio and Christopher Dasilera. “Congratulations to all the students, not only the winners and semi-finalists, but also to all who submitted essays, General Manager Pete Dion said. “All the essays were insightful and demonstrated just how committed the students are to energy conservation and awareness.” All students who submitted an essay received a WMGLD backpack, and each semi-finalist received an LED nightlight. The seven winners also received a special award certificate and a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. Each winner read his or her essay during the ceremony which was recorded at the WCAT studios and has been broadcast on local cable access TV.
