Watertown Field Hockey and Soccer Teams Focus on the 'Second Season'

The Raiders field hockey team will start the 2011 state tournament Friday against Lynnfield, and both the boys' and girls' soccer teams received tourney bids.

, and another undefeated regular season for the Watertown High School field hockey team, Coach Eileen Donahue will now focus on the second season — the state tournament.

After defeating Melrose last Friday, the Raiders are 17-0-1, and for the third straight year the team finished the regular season without a loss. They start their tournament Friday, while both the girls' and boys' soccer teams were selected for the tournament.

Donahue — who now has a career record of 500 wins, 30 losses and 45 ties — said the key to her success has been just focus on winning the next game.

“You can dominate the game, but let in that one goal,” Donahue said. “(For) the bottom line, people are going to look at the scoreboard — so, I can’t look past anything.”

With the regular season complete, Donahue said she has her eyes on the tourney.

“That was the only thing we were focused on: one game,” Donahue said. “Now the regular season is over and we can work on focusing on our second season.”.

The Raiders look to defend their two-straight MIAA Div. 2 state championships.

First up for the North Section No. 1 seed is Lynnfield, Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Waltham High School.

Lynnfield, the No. 9 seed, defeated No. 8 Georgetown 5-1 on Wednesday.

Soccer Teams Heading for the Tourney

Thursday, the MIAA released the soccer state tournament brackets, and Watertown High School has a team in both the girls' and boys' tournament.

The Raiders boys' team earned a No. 16 seed in MIAA Div. 3 North Section tournament and will host Weston Saturday. They will play at Filippello Park at 2:30 p.m.

The girls' travel to Chelsea to face No. 14 Pope John at 5 p.m. The Raiders received a No. 19 seed in the Div. 3 North Section.
