WAYLAND, MA — Three Wayland firefighters helped deliver a baby over the weekend who couldn't wait to get to the hospital.

The call to assist an expecting mother along Edgewood Road came in at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Wayland's town ambulance, however, was busy with another emergency, and so the firefighters headed to the scene in an engine truck, Wayland Chief Neil McPherson said Monday.

Firefighter Todd Winner, who is also an EMT, and Lt. Dean Casali helped deliver the baby, with Capt. Dan Buentello assisting. After the delivery, an ambulance from Framingham picked up the new mom and newborn and took them to Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

The weekend incident was at least the third extraordinary delivery in the area recently.

In March, Weston-based state trooper Paule Dabene was on patrol along the Mass Pike during the morning rush when a man flagged him down from the breakdown lane. The man was stuck in traffic and needed to get to Newton-Wellesley, so Dabene hopped in his cruiser and cleared a path to get them there on time.

And late last month, Marlborough firefighter Matt Lupisella had the pleasure of delivering his own daughter in an ambulance along I-290 — actually the second time Lupisella has helped deliver a baby outside of a hospital setting.
