WAYLAND, MA — Wayland residents wrapped up the 2026 Annual Town Meeting this week after considering 41 warrant articles covering the town budget, zoning updates, infrastructure projects and long-term planning initiatives.
The meeting, which resumed for a second night on May 5 at the Wayland High School Field House, resulted in the approval of the town’s fiscal year 2027 operating budget along with a series of financial and policy measures that town officials say will shape Wayland’s priorities for the coming year.
Voters approved Article 10, the Fiscal Year 2027 Omnibus Budget and Enterprise Fund Capital Budgets. The omnibus budget passed 256-19, while the capital budgets passed 224-15.
Several early financial articles also passed, including Article 2, payment of previous fiscal years’ unpaid bills; Article 3, enterprise fund budgets; and consent-calendar Articles 4 through 8, covering OPEB funding, revolving fund limits, the Surface Water Quality Committee budget, the Capital Stabilization Fund and the Special Education Reserve Fund.
Town Meeting also approved Article 9, updating personnel bylaws and the wage and classification plan, and funding union agreements.
A major infrastructure item, Article 15, passed, authorizing construction funding for Wayland’s long-term water supply.
Housing and zoning measures also advanced. Voters approved Article 24, accessory dwelling unit zoning amendments, and Article 25, changes to maximum dimensions in the Multi-Family Housing Route 20 West Sub-District.
Several Sherman’s Bridge-related citizens petitions did not move forward. Article 26, seeking to ban heavy commercial vehicles on Sherman’s Bridge Road, failed. Article 28, which included motions to reduce the speed limit and add crosswalk/signage improvements, also failed. Articles 27, 29, 30 and 41 were indefinitely postponed.
Other approved articles included Article 17, allowing additional liquor licenses; Article 21, easements connected to the Mass Central Rail Trail near Wayland Town Center; Article 34, visible house numbers; Article 35, green burials; Article 37, print-free digital legal notices; and Article 38, a prohibition on cryptocurrency machines.
